Welcome to the Edge!
My name is Julian Hough, a UK-born birder, photographer and writer who now lives in New Haven, CT, USA.
After 50 years of birding and guiding across six continents, I understand the problems and pitfalls of birding. From distant shorebirds to soaring hawks, my goal is to help you crack some tough identifications as well as connect with others and share fun stories about birds and birding.
Each month, I plan to share helpful content across four broad topics:
Crippling Views: Essays and stories from 50 years in the field.
On the Road: Hard-won travel tips and tales from home and away.
Working the Bird: Cracking the code of field IDs.
Beyond the Basics: Pro-ID tips and resource guides.

How Birding on the Edge Works
Free Subscribers
Twice-Monthly Dispatches: Every two weeks, you’ll receive stories from the field, ID and travel tips, and bird-related stories.
No Initial Paywalls: To build my community, for a while most content will be open and freely available to all subscribers.
The Resource Library (Coming Soon)
I am currently assembling a Subscriber Resource Library—a “ghost page” where all my resource PDFs, e.g., tricky species ID, will live. Once it launches, all subscribers will receive a permanent access link. As I add new material, it will automatically appear there for you to download.
Future Paid Supporters
Eventually, I plan to introduce a paid tier for those who wish to support the hard work that goes into producing the content.
Exclusive Access: Paid members will get first access to advanced PDFs and other resources.
